Treatment
Project 5 was all about the creation of a brief Treatment for a 3D short about 1 wordpage long. Ive not really done a treatment before, so I am not sure if I really nailed it here or not.
As far as I could tell, the treatment is what you could call a written storyboard. I found that to be the best analogy to wrap my head around it. You indicate what, where and who in brief words, what the scene is and whats happening. Most of the major things that will happen, be it an important sound or camera angle, should be written there, so that when a producer skims through it he can instantly "get" what you are trying to convey.
The Story
My story for this treatment was one I have had lying around for a while. A few years back I started a comic project I called E.L.E, short for Extinction Level Event. It was based on a little idea I had written out of boredom in high school, or sumthing, waiting for math class to end.
Anyway, what that turned into was this:

These are three first pages of this project I started. And also the only pages produced.. I got kinda stuck after this, and after trying several ways to continue it, it was eventually put on hold. But never forgotten..
So from there on it was brought up again when my group started pitching ideas for the final project next semester. And from that I got several new ideas to how to make more out of my little story.
And 4-5 months later we are here, at Project #5, the treatment. And seeing as I might want to make this little story go 3D one day, I chose to continue with it, to further refine it and get some more ideas for it. And here it is. First the story pitch:

E.L.E. Story Pitch |
This story is basically about the frailty of mankind, not to mention the frailty of all things we know, all that which makes us "us", including the planet we live on. But its also about the tenacity of mankind and its will to survive nomatter how dire the situation. It is something everyone can relate to, one way or the other.
The original 3 pages was going to be more about a journey, to search for a new place to call home. Involving many characters over a long period. As for this treatment and the criterias for it, the story had to be somewhat redone, and a central captain, or caretaker, was born to take the lead.
When making a treatment, its important to keep in mind that it is a treatment and should be written like that. That includes camera angles, important noises/sounds, and so forth. Its kinda hard to write like that and keep reminding yourself not to go wild in the usage of descriptive words to explain a scene. So I tried my best at doing that, envisioning how I would like the short to play out in my mind. Im not entirely sure I managed to do what was required, but I think I am in the ballpark atleast ^^
And here is the treatment itself:

Its a bit short, I know, but seeing how I kept the story to a minimum, there was really not much more needed I suppose. Could probably have written a hell of a lot more and making things more complex, but the timerestrictions for these 3 project's (treatment, storyboard, animatic) are way to short to be able to produce what I want and need to a GOOD enough state. Just mentioning it.. M'kay Noroff..? Get the hint right...? Wink wink? Yeah thats what I thought, so, nextyears students, give them more time.
Final Thoughts
In the end I just wanna say that there is still some issues with it, and its continuity. I imagine a much longer short, than what the treatment criterias allow for, and therefore loosing a bit of the complexity of this story I envision. Still believe it works like this, and that it could be cool to take it further into the realm of 3D.
